Hey guys PFA

Chasing a starter motor for my 1968 280se located in Sutherland shire in Sydney

Or anyone around the area that can rebuild them for me

Any help would be appreciated thank you

Red 1968 W108 280SE in Sutherland driveway

Cars in the driveway. Will turn over on a hot day but cold mornings it just clicks. Tested the battery (12.6V) and the solenoid (clicks when energised). Pretty sure the starter is on the way out.

Daniel - lovely car, that's DB534 Signal Red over what looks like the original cognac MB-Tex. 1968 280SE M130 inline-six should be running the Bosch starter 0 001 311 052 (12V, 1.4kW).. two Australian routes:

  • Rebuild - Cooks Hill Auto Electrical at Bexley (Mick, 02 9587 4480) rebuilds these for $280 with a 12-month warranty. Drop-off, 3-day turnaround. They have the brushes, bushes, solenoid kit on the shelf for this exact unit. Bexley is 25 minutes from Sutherland.
  • Replace new - Bosch part still in production via Mercedes-Benz Classic, current price $980. Overkill if your existing unit is rebuildable.

Before you remove it for the rebuild - check the battery cable connections at the starter. The OEM cable on these is 50 years old and the lugs corrode. Clean both ends with a wire brush and see if the cold-start improves. 30% of "starter on the way out" turns out to be the cable. Worth 10 minutes before you spend the $280..

Update. Cleaned both ends of the battery-to-starter cable with a wire brush this morning. Tightened both clamps. Engine started on the first try. Cold or warm, no difference, just turns over.

Billy you saved me $280. The cable was clean once polished but had a green oxide buildup at the starter-end lug that was clearly the resistance.

Pinned the thread mentally. Closing.

Thread locked 14-03-2021 with Buy / Sell / Swap suspension. Daniel did not need a starter motor - the issue was a corroded cable lug, fixed for free.
