FOR SALE - 1982 Mercedes-Benz 280CE Coupe (C123) - PROJECT - $4,800 - Newcastle pickup

Selling my 280CE project car. Bought it 18 months ago intending to do a full restoration. Life happened, the wife's not happy, the garage needs to go back to being a garage.

This is a PROJECT CAR. Read that twice before you message me. It does not run. It needs everything. I am not putting it back together for you to drive home.

Here she is on the trailer when I picked her up. The notes on the windscreen are previous owner's measurements and timing notes, not mine.

280CE on trailer in driveway

The car:

  • 1982 Mercedes-Benz 280CE Coupe (C123 chassis)
  • DB904 Midnight Blue (factory)
  • Cognac MB-Tex interior - the door cards are intact, headlining is gone
  • M110 2.8L inline-six (DOHC twin-cam) - currently OUT of the car, sitting on a pallet in my shed
  • Auto trans (722.3) - also out, on the same pallet
  • Body is mostly straight. Driver door has been off and on a few times, hinge bushes will need new pins
  • NO RUST in the floors (ive had it on the hoist twice, this is the bit I'm certain of)
  • Some surface rust on the boot floor under the spare wheel well
  • Front struts removed. Both currently in a box.
  • Steering box is on the car, not done
  • Chrome bumpers are intact and straight
  • Glass is all there, rear quarter glass has a chip
  • 14" Mercedes alloys, four good, one curbed
  • Books are gone, no service history
  • NOT REGISTERED. Not been on the road since 2011.

Interior shot - you can see the dash is partially out, seats are out of the car for trim work that never happened:

280CE interior with dash partially out

Engine bay (empty - engine on the pallet as mentioned):

280CE empty engine bay

Side view on the trailer when she came home:

Front 3/4 - the chrome is honest, the paint is original-tired but not patchy:

And these are from the move down from Coffs to Newcastle a year ago. Stopped at the servo on the M1 around 11pm. The Amplify on the way in to Hexham:

280CE at servo at night 280CE at servo side 280CE at servo rear 280CE at servo final

What's included:

  • The car (rolling shell)
  • M110 engine on a pallet (turns by hand, I have not run it)
  • 722.3 auto trans on the same pallet
  • Front struts in a box
  • All the interior trim (door cards, headlining off-cuts, carpet)
  • Three boxes of spare parts the previous owner gave me - I have not been thru them
  • The trailer? No, you bring the trailer

What's NOT included:

  • The wife's patience
  • Registration
  • A roadworthy
  • Any guarantee the engine will run when you put it back in

Price: $4,800 firm.

I know this is dear for a non-running project. I know. But this is a SOLID 280CE shell with the original engine and trans on a pallet next to it. You will struggle to find another C123 coupe with the floors this good for under $8,000 driving. If you want a driver, buy a driver. If you want a base car for a proper restoration, this is your base.

Not interested in:

  • "What's your best"
  • Tyre kickers
  • People who want me to put it back together
  • Anyone south of Wollongong unless you have your own transport

Newcastle pickup. Bring a trailer and 4 mates because the body has to be pushed on. Cash on the day. PM only, I don't want my phone ringing.

Dean.. buyers will ask this stuff so here it is.

M110 DOHC in a C123 is the good one. If its original and turns by hand, that engine is $1,800-$2,200 to the right bloke. 722.3 behind it is right too, fits W116 / W123 280 family.

Floors are the money bit. C123 floor pans can eat $4,000+ before paint. if Dean is right and the photos back it up, $4,800 with engine and trans sitting there is fair.

Need underside floor pics, data plate and a photo with the cam cover off if possible. dont need a whole album.. just proof its M110 and not a story.

Dean.. adding to Billy. 280CE ran 1977 to 1985, 1982 should be late facelift with the rubber-strip bumpers and dual rounds. data plate starts 123.053. DB904 Midnight Blue is right for 1981-1985.

Photos fit late C123. paint looks like old DB904 not respray shiny.

If M110 and floors check out, $4,800 makes sense. driver-grade restored is $22,000-$28,000 now, build budget probly $14,000-$18,000 if your not silly.. maths only just works.

BRO. Dean.

$4,800 for a non-running project is strong but I respect it because the engine and trans are on the pallet not lost in someone's shed. That's the difference between a "project" and a "shell."

I'd offer $4,200 cash on Saturday but Billy and Hugo will tell you that's lowball and they're right. Holding offer at $4,200 if it doesn't move at $4,800.

fair enough Bro

Billy and Hugo thanks. photos requested ill have up tonight after work.. data plate close-ups to Billy.

Johnny - $4,200 noted but price stays $4,800 firm. Wife wants the garage back not a debate.

Two days ago I had a couple side photos in better light - posting now:

280CE side view

Engine bay close-up tonight as promised.

Dean I'll take it at $4,800. Saw the engine photos Billy posted to the M.A.L.A.K.A.S. private channel - that's a genuine M110 with the right inlet manifold. Floors photo from underneath looks honest.

Saturday 08-03 works. I'll come up with my brother's trailer and 4 mates. Cash on the day. PM your address.

This will be my Picton project's running mate. Same chassis family, gives me a parts car for the long term and a second body if I ever lose patience with the SLC.
