Moderator note (Lefteris_IT, 03-09-2019): the W124 family is currently under SMP §7.2 review pending the member vote scheduled for Q1 2015 to determine whether the model qualifies for "classic" status on this forum. Pending that vote, W124 listings are permitted with the caveat that classic status is contested. Sellers may not assert classic status in the thread title. Buyers should be aware that HVS eligibility for a 1989 W124 230E may be subject to change. Listing approved with the above caveat in the title (per seller request).

FOR SALE - 1989 Mercedes-Benz W124 230E sedan - $6,200 - Glen Waverley VIC

Listing this as a "classic" even though Lefteris has put the §7.2 caveat in the moderator note. ill let the buyers decide what to call it. The car is 25 years old, runs perfectly, and looks like the day it left Mercedes-Benz Australia's Melbourne facility. If that's not a classic in 2014 then I don't know what is.

The car:

  • 1989 Mercedes-Benz W124 230E sedan
  • Pearl Grey Metallic (DB735) over blue MB-Tex
  • M102.982 2.3 litre four-cylinder Bosch KE-Jetronic
  • Auto trans (722.4 four-speed), shifts cleanly
  • 147,000 km, original logbook
  • Australian-delivery, MBA/P Melbourne 03-1989
  • Two previous owners (my father, then me, 2009)
  • Service history complete - Mercedes dealer until 2002, independent specialist since
  • HVS application submitted 2013, currently pending due to model-year classification
  • 15" 8-hole alloys (factory)
  • Working factory air conditioning (R12, converted to R134a 2008)
  • Sunroof works
  • Cruise control works
  • Cassette stereo (Becker) works
  • No rust anywhere I can see
  • Front bumper has a small scuff from a Coles trolley

Why selling: upgrading to the 1985 380SEL that's going for $48,000 elsewhere on this forum. Sorry Berny - I know you withdrew yours - I'll be buying a different one.

Also a sheep farmer friend has a 1989 420 SEL I'm buying the shell out of for my W126 380 → 420 conversion project, but that's not driving the sale of this W124. the W124 has to go because my garage is full.

Price: $6,200 firm. Not interested in trades, finance, or "what's your best."

PM for inspection. Glen Waverley pickup or I can deliver Sydney for $400 fuel + freight.

Can text photos when I get home tonight, the camera battery is flat.

Malcolm.

$6,200 for a 1989 W124 230E with 147k and full books is fair money. The 230E is a beautifully built car. M102 four-cylinder will run forever if you change the timing chain on schedule (130,000 km Mercedes specified, most people leave it too long).

However. It is not a classic.

1989 is 25 years ago. My SEL is also from 1985 and I'll grant you the bracket. But a 230E is a 1989 daily driver that happens to have aged well. Steve and I had a conversation about this in 2012 and he was very clear: the W124 is not a classic until the year 2030 at the earliest, and even then we are talking about specific variants like the 500E, not the 230E.

If you list it as a classic the SMP §7.2 caveat that Lefteris put in his mod note will stay there. Just call it what it is. A clean modern Mercedes-Benz, well looked after, fair price.

Good luck with the sale.

(And yes I withdrew the 380SEL. mrs B said no.)

Adding to the moderator note since I'm one of the people sponsoring the §7.2 review.

The W124 classic status question has been live on this forum since 2012. Berny is correct that Uncle Steve's stated view was that the W124 is not a classic until at least 2030, and that this view informed §7.2 as currently written. The Q1 2015 member vote will be the first formal mechanism to either confirm or supersede Steve's position.

For Malcolm specifically: the listing is permitted. The "classic status TBD per SMP §7.2" in the title is the agreed caveat language. Members are welcome to debate the model's classic status in this thread provided the debate does not derail the sale.

The car looks clean and the price is fair.

BRO. Malcolm.

$6,200 is strong for a 230E. I sold a 1990 260E with 124k for $4,400 at the yard six months ago. Cash on the day.

Still.. Glen Waverley to Sydney delivery at $400 is fair. pm me if it doesnt move at $6,200 and ill see if Vasilis in Strathfield wants it at $5,400.

Classic status thing.. yeah nah not a classic yet. Berny and Con are right. But clean 230E like this is rarer then a 1989 380SE because nobody kept them. in 2030 youll all say you should of bought one.

ill have one at the yard next month if you missed this one. different car. cleaner.

Malcolm - car looks correct. docs complete. price lines up with Glass's Guide AU for a 1989 W124 230E in that condition.

fyi buyers need to know "classic status" for HVS in NSW is not the same as the forum §7.2 vote. NSW HVS is age. 30 years from manufacture. as of 2014 thats pre-1984. A 1989 W124 230E wont be HVS eligible in NSW until 2019, so that pending HVS bit will probly just sit there..

doesnt hurt the value of a clean Australian-delivered car. just changes how it can be registered in NSW.

The 230E with KE-Jetronic is a seperate thing.. under-rated. Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific delivery late 1980s was built proper.

Hugo - that clarification is genuinely useful. I'll update the listing - "HVS application pending not eligible until 2019."

Berny - point taken. Will not call the 230E a classic.

Con - thank you for the moderator clarification, very fair process.

Johnny - I'll keep the $5,400 backup offer in mind. Genuine cash buyer first.

The car is at my house in Glen Waverley. Will respond to PMs this evening.

Malcolm I'll take it at $6,200.

Cash on Saturday 22-03. I'll fly to Melbourne, you drive me back to Sydney in the car, I cover the petrol and your bus ticket home plus a steak dinner at Lygon Street.

Not for me - my niece is starting at UNSW and her father (my brother Kosta) wants her to have a Mercedes "for safety." A 1989 230E in this condition is exactly the car. Not a classic, won't get HVS until 2019, just a fundamentally good car that will outlast her degree.

PM me your bank details for the deposit.

Chris done. Saturday 22-03. Cash on the day, $6,200, Lygon Street steak dinner accepted with thanks.

Berny / Hugo / Con / Lefteris - thank you for keeping this thread honest. A first-time seller couldn't have asked for a better forum. The §7.2 caveat was annoying at first but it kept the listing accurate.

Johnny - good luck with the yard.

Marking sold.

Thread locked 14-03-2021 as part of forum-wide Buy / Sell / Swap suspension following ASIC correspondence. Chris_K completed the transaction with Malcolm on 20-08-2019 outside forum context, per the §10.4 procedural framework. Vehicle subsequently registered in NSW under Chris_K's niece's name.

Post-script (added by Lefteris_IT, 14-04-2019): The Q1 2019 member vote on W124 classic status resolved against classic designation by 47-29. The §7.2 review remains in force. The 1989 W124 230E continues to be permitted on this forum as a "recent Mercedes" rather then a classic.

Post-script (added by Lefteris_IT, 18-04-2019): A 2019 re-vote on W124 classic status (motion submitted by Banksia_Park_Berny following Uncle_Steve's passing) resolved in favour of classic designation by 88-12, reversing the 2015 decision. §7.2 will be revised in the next SMP revision. W124 listings would now qualify for full classic categorization if the Buy / Sell / Swap subforum were not still suspended.
