Just finished fixing the reverse lights on my W108. Turns out it was the neutral safety switch. Getting that out is a mission, being fixed into the side of the transmission with flat head set screws, with bugger all access. Ended up being the springs on one of the rocker contacts inside the NSS had perished (top of first pic), so I replaced those springs and that was fine. One tip is to remember how it came apart, as the inner plastic dial has to go back in a certain way. Best to know this before you reassemble the NSS and mount it on the side of the transmission... roads the flat head screws with hex head M5 boots so the next poor person has an easier task ahead of them.

Martin - this is exactly the kind of post the Tech Library is built for.. bookmarking and will request the mod team move a copy of this thread into the W108 transmission section..

For others reading: the W108/W109 neutral safety switch is Mercedes-Benz part number 108 545 02 14. NLA from Mercedes-Benz Group since 2008. Rebuild kit (springs and contacts) is available from Niemoeller as 108 545 02 14R at €38 ($62 landed). Your photo shows the rebuild approach Martin took - replacing the perished contact springs rather then the whole unit.

The M5 hex-head replacement screws for the flat-head originals is exactly the upgrade I do on every W108 NSS that crosses my bench. Costs $4 in stainless from Bunnings and saves the next person the 90-minute remove-and-strip exercise that the flat-head originals demand.

Well documented Martin. Thank you for sharing.
