W116 climate control switch refurb - the temperature wheel that snaps - is there a fix or do I source another

checking before i order parts.

1977 450SEL daily. Temp wheel on the climate panel has been clicky-grindy for a year, today it snapped off in my hand. Car is in lockdown with me so plenty of time.

The wheel is just a plastic dial that clips onto a metal shaft on the back of the switch. Metal shaft fine. Plastic wheel cracked clean off, the clip teeth have aged out.

Anyone reproducing the dial or do i need to chase a complete switch assembly second-hand

The dial wheels are not reproduced. A few Belgian and German specialists 3D-print replicas in PA-12 (nylon) that are dimensionally correct but the colour and finish do not match the original (the originals are injection-moulded ABS with a specific texture that 3D printing does not reproduce).

The correct answer is a second-hand switch assembly from a parts car. The W116 climate panel is dimensionally identical from 1974 to 1980. Earlier panels (1972-1974) have different graphics but the switch assembly is interchangeable. Two known parts cars in NSW currently:

The 1975 280SE in Earlwood that Con's brother bought as a donor in 2018. Climate panel is intact. Con will know.

Vic-based wrecker (Geoff Panton Hill) had a 1977 450SEL on the books in 2019. May or may not still be there. I have his number if you want it.

Either should be about $80 for the dial alone, or $180 for the complete switch.

The 280SE is still in the yard.. my brother has been promising to get it on club rego for 2 years. The climate panel is intact. I will pull the dial for you Saturday morning if Marrickville is on the table this week (lockdown 5km radius pending, which I think it currently is not, so come over).
