cant find the old thread.

Got a client looking at a 1983 380SEC. Car is clean. Price is fair. He wants to swap a 500 engine in eventually.

Actual engine differences between the 380 (M116) and the 500 (M117) on the W126 coupe. Are they bolt-in. Is the swap straightforward or a nightmare. Asking because i need to advise the client properly.

I know the 500 is more displacement (5.0 vs 3.8) and more torque. But is it a simple sub or do i need to budget for harnesses ECU gearbox etc

Johnny.. M116 3.8 and M117 5.0 are same family, but swap is not just engine out engine in.

Mounts and 722.3 bellhousing line up. thats the easy part.

Fuel system changes. 500 uses bigger K-Jet / K-Jet-EH gear, pump, lines, distributor and cold-start stuff. wiring has extra lambda, throttle position and cold-start inputs. call it 6 hours wiring if you know what your doing.

Cooling changes too. 500 radiator and fan. 380 radiator is too small. exhaust is different from manifolds back. 380 pipes wont flow enough.

Clean swap parts list about $6,500 in 2018 from wrecked 500SEC donors, about $12,000 if buying new where you can. labour 40-50 hours.

Better advise: buy a 500SEC. clean 500 is about $18,000, clean 380 about $12,000. the $6,000 gap is less then the swap..

Vasilios is correct.. the economics of the 380-to-500 swap have never made sense. The car you create is a 500SEC with a wrong VIN plate (the M116 chassis plate). The car loses its originality value and gains nothing it could not have had by buying the original..

Tell your client to buy a 500SEC. Or buy a 380SEC and accept it as a 380SEC, which is a fine car in its own right.

BROOOS. Both of you legends. Will pass along. Client will go 380 or 500, not the swap.

Fair.
